Choosing the Right Bikini for Your Body Shape

With the first signs of Spring starting to make an appearance in South Africa, it’s time to once again think about getting ready for poolside lounging, swimming and beach fun. It’s also the time that most women dread because it signals the start of the challenging search to find the best bikini for your body shape.

We all dream about that perfect swimsuit – the one that fits in all the right places, shows off your best assets and leaves you feeling more confident about showing off some skin. Whether you’re big busted, curvy or plus size – knowing your body type could go a long way to choose the right style to flatter your figure.

We’ve put together a short guide on how to choose a swimsuit for your body type to make your shopping experience that much simpler.

Hourglass

You have: A large bust and hips with a smaller waist

Go for: A bikini that offers some support such as an underwire bikini or halter top bikinis or even a stylish one-piece with a deep plunge. Stick to solid colours or a small print that won’t detract from your curvaceous figure.

Avoid: Busy patterns that could make your body look disproportional and skimpy, stringy bikini tops or bottoms.

Pear Shape

You have: A prominent lower half and slim shoulders

Go for: Something that accentuates your top half. Try a bold, printed or brightly coloured bikini top with a simple, solid coloured bottom to create a more balanced look.

Avoid: Boy shorts or one-piece swimsuits that may shorten your legs and put more emphasis on your hips. If you do go for a one-piece, choose something with horizontal stripes across the bust to make your chest look fuller.

Apple

You have: A bigger bust with most of your body’s weight carried around the middle, and slimmer legs and arms.

Go for: A one-piece that will flatten your tummy and show of your slim legs. If you prefer the look of a two-piece, try a plain bikini top that offers good support and patterned or high cut bottoms that will accentuate all your best features.

Avoid: Thin, strappy bikinis or billowy swimsuits that will make your mid-section appear bulkier.

Athletic

You have: A leaner, toned figure – with a small bust and hips

Go for: Feminine prints, frills and embellishments that create the illusion of curves for your straight frame and add some volume to your chest to make it appear fuller.

Avoid: Bandeau style tops that will flatten your chest.

Plus Size

You have: A fuller figure all around

Go for: Thick straps and underwire to provide support to a bigger bust and high cut bottoms to keep the tummy tucked in. Also try a body-hugging suit with thick material or supportive lining to streamline your figure. Don’t limit yourself to black – although it’s a slimming colour, abstract prints and subtle ruching can also create the same effect.

There are plenty of plus size bikinis and swimsuits available from Simply Gorgeous to flatter a larger figure in a variety of cute styles and pretty colours that will highlight your assets where you want them to.

Avoid: Stringy bikinis that provide little support and coverage
